Key Features of the Document Upload Tool
• Secure Digital Submission: Taxpayers can now upload scans, photos, or digital copies of documents in formats such as JPG, PNG, or PDF directly through the IRS website.
• Immediate Confirmation: Upon successful upload, users receive immediate confirmation, ensuring transparency and reducing uncertainties associated with document submission.

To utilize the Document Upload Tool, taxpayers need:
• An access code provided by the IRS or the specific notice or letter number.
• The first and last name or business name as indicated on the notice or letter.
• Social Security Number (SSN), Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), or Employer Identification Number (EIN).
By entering this information, users can securely upload up to 40 files, with each file not exceeding 15MB.
Benefits of the Digital Approach
The transition to digital document submission offers several advantages:
• Efficiency: Reduces processing times compared to traditional mail, leading to quicker resolutions and potentially faster tax refunds.
• Convenience: Allows taxpayers to submit documents at any time without the need for physical mailing.
• Security: Ensures that sensitive information is transmitted through a secure channel, minimizing risks associated with mailing physical documents.
Recent Milestones and Future Outlook
Since its initial launch in 2021 and subsequent expansion in 2023, the Document Upload Tool has reached significant milestones, including surpassing one million submissions. This reflects the IRS’s commitment to embracing digital solutions to enhance taxpayer services.
As the IRS continues to expand its digital services, taxpayers are encouraged to utilize the Document Upload Tool for a more efficient and secure tax filing experience.
