Randy Martin, Grandfather of Patrick Mahomes, Passes Away at 78

Larry “Randy” Martin, the grandfather of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, passed away on February 12, 2025, at the age of 78. His daughter, Randi Mahomes, shared the news on social media, expressing her deep sorrow. Martin had been in hospice care since January, following a hospitalization in September 2024 for an undisclosed illness. 

A Life Dedicated to Education and Family

Born on January 6, 1947, Martin devoted his career to education, serving as a teacher, counselor, and administrator in various Texas schools, including Troup, Maydelle, Palestine, LaPoynor, and Whitehouse. He also worked with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Gatesville Boys School, and served as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor. His commitment to education and counseling impacted countless students and individuals throughout his career. 

Martin was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren, including Patrick Mahomes, and 13 great-grandchildren. His family remembers him for his inquisitive spirit, wisdom, and love of music. Despite his health challenges, Martin was determined to watch his grandson play in the Super Bowl, a testament to his enduring support and pride in his family’s achievements. 

Funeral Services and Legacy

The funeral service for Martin was held on February 17, 2025, in Troup, Texas. Patrick Mahomes, along with his brother Jackson and other grandchildren, served as pallbearers, honoring their grandfather’s memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to the Cameron-J. Jarvis Troup Municipal Library in Martin’s honor, reflecting his lifelong dedication to education and community service. 

Martin’s passing came shortly after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite the personal and professional challenges, Patrick Mahomes expressed gratitude for the support from fans and pledged to learn and improve from the experience. 

Randy Martin’s legacy as an educator, counselor, and devoted family man continues to inspire those who knew him. His life’s work and dedication to his family leave an enduring impact on his community and loved ones.
